July 10, Glory Fall to Bandits 8-4

    Game recap.

    NPF website story.

I had league games, so I was unable to watch the game tonight. This is pieced together from various sources, to the best of my abilities, and may contain some inaccuracies in the details.

Tonight's game was a continuation of last night's rainout, and the NPF Recap is listed under July 10, so that's why my title says that as well. We were already down 1-0 before we started play on Friday evening. (Quick recap from Thursday: May singled, sac-bunted to second, went to third when Folden reached on Jackson's error, then May scored on a sac-fly from Clark.)  We were able to get out of the first inning without any more damage, but things fell apart in the second.

Both starting pitchers stayed in the game (Sallinger vs Serrano). In the second, Serrano gave up a single and a walk before getting two outs, one thanks to an interference call. But a wild pitch allowed a run to score, followed by a hit batter and walk, and that was the end of the night for Serrano. Lisa Ferguson came on in relief, but things didn't get much better. She hit the first batter she faced to load the bases. Rachel Folden then singled home two of those runners (both charged to Desi), and Jaime Clark singled home another (charged to Fergie). A fifth run would have scored, but Folden was thrown out at the plate on Clark's hit. (Again, she must forget she's a catcher, and think she's fast, to try to score from second on a single.) By then we were down 5-0 after just 2 innings.

Although Fergie would hold the Bandits scoreless in the 3rd and 4th, the Glory didn't use the opportunity to cut into the lead.

The Bandits would score two more in the 5th on Mindy Cowles 2-run HR (the first of her career). Finally the Glory got on the board, thanks to LaDonia Hughes first HR of the season. It was a solo shot, so we were down 7-1 going after five and a half.

Chicago answered with one of their own, on Emily Nichols RBI single, which meant we trailed by 7 with just 3 outs left.

The seventh inning saw a last-gasp effort from the Glory, as Sara Larquier's 3-run HR made the score respectable, but that was all she wrote.  The only other hits for the Glory were Barber's double and Oli's single. (The Bandits story says single, but the NPF stats say double, for Barber.)

An unusual night for the Glory, because the pitching struggled. Desi was charged with 4 runs in just 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and walking 2. Fergie also gave up 4 runs in 4 and 1/3 inning. She allowed 6 hits (1 HR) and also walked 2, while striking out 3.

Desi took the loss, to fall to  6-4 on the year. Sallinger pitched another great game (over two nights), at least through 5+ innings. When we finally started to get to her, it was too little, too late. She gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 4. The win improves her record to 5-3.

End Notes: Amber Jackson injured her right ankle in the 4th inning, and left the game. This is according to the Bandits website story, which also says that Jackson walked in the 7th inning. The NPF stats show Jackson walking twice, with 3 plate appearances. So who knows -I guess we'll have to wait and she plays in Saturday's double-header, starting at 6 PM EDT.
