Game recap.
NPF website story (coming soon).
It's a good thing we already had third place locked up before we went
to New England. We scored a grand total of 4 runs over the 4 game
series. We're asking way too much of our pitchers right now. We need to
start hitting or we might as well save the money and skip Wisconsin.
Tonight was a rematch of the series opener, with Sarah Pauly facing Eileen Canney.
New England opened the scoring, with one run in the second inning. Gina
Carbonatto singled, then scored on Lisa Iancin's RBI double.
Trailing 1-0, we finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th inning. Oli
lead off the inning with a walk, and went to on Sara Larquier's bunt,
which apparently so confused the pitcher that she chose to keep the
ball rather than throw to a base for an out. (Not sure if this was
scored an hit or a fielder's choice.) At some point Cambria Miranda
went in to run for Oli. Jessica Dignon tried her luck with a bunt, and
again New England failed to get an out at any base. The bases were
loaded with no outs, and really thanks to no hits from us. Neither Leah
English nor Callista Balko could get a runner home, but Jessica Moore
worked Canney for an RBI walk.
The tie game did not last long, as the Riptide went back on top in the
home half of the 4th. Lisa Modglin, who apparently really likes hitting
against the Glory, singled to start the inning. She went to second on a
sacrifice, and scored on Alex Sutton's single. Taryne Mowatt relieved
Pauly in the 4th, but since we were done scoring, it didn't matter that
she shut down New England the rest of the way.
Pauly took the loss to fall to 11-6 on the year. She allowed 2 runs on
4 hits, striking out 2 in 3.1 innings. Mowatt allowed no hits during
her 2.2 shutout innings, but did walk 4 batters. Canney's win moved her
into a tie for the league lead, with Katie Burkhart, with 13. Her 8
strikeouts tonight were enough to give her 2nd place with 150, just 7
behind Angela Tincher and one ahead of Burkhart.
Pauly was able to end the regular season with the ERA title. Her 1.74
(or 1.72 in the Team Stats) was just enough to stay ahead of Katie
Burkhart's 1.88. Congrats to Sarah, who also finished 4th in Ks. She
and teammate Desiree Serrano tied for 6th in the league in wins (11),
and Desi finished 9th in the league in ERA (2.87). Mowatt finished with
an ERA of 1.46, but her 67 innings were not quite enough to qualify (84
was the minimum).
In the batting categories, Sara Larquier and Oli finished in a three
way tie for first in HRs with Chicago's Stacy May (13). Oli finished
5th in RBIs (32), 7th in average (.309), tied for first with Kristen
Zaleski of Rockford in walks (35), 2nd to May in slugging (.650), and
3rd in OBA (.479). Courtney Bures finished in a 4-way tie for most
times being hit by a pitch, with 10. Larquier finished just behind Oli
with 30 RBIs.
