August 23, Glory Use Small Ball and Long Ball in 11-2 Win Over Riptide

The Game Tracker system was well hidden, and apparently not even working, until several innings into the the game.

Sarah Pauly vs Jocelyn Forest.

Today's game started out similarly to yesterday's with the home team getting a big lead in the bottom of the first. Fortunately, we were the home team.

Nicole Barber got us started with a bunt single, and reaching second on a throwing error. LaDonia Hughes also bunt singled, advancing Barber to third. Some sort of double steal was attempted, but it backfired, as Hughes reached second but Barber was out at home. Another infield single by Amber Jackson again put runners on the corners. This time we let Oli be Oli, and her single to left scored Hughes. Sara Larquier drew a walk to load the bases, at which point Cambria Miranda went to second to run for Oli. Courtney Bures singled in another run. Jessica Dignon reached on an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Miranda. With runners on the corners again, we again stole second, and a throwing error got her to third and brought Larquier in for the 4th run of the inning. Callie Piper finished off the scoring with a single to center, plating Dignon. A looking K ended the inning, but a 5 run lead just might be enough against New England.

Neither team scored in the second. New England got on the board in the top of the third, thanks to 2 straight walks to start the inning. A sac bunt moved the runners up 60 feet each. Carrie Martin "singled" to first, yet we somehow got the lead runner out at the plate, on a 3-6-2 play. New England still had runners at second and third when the play ended, and they finally scored on yet another infield single. A fly to left ended the inning, with the score 5-1 Glory.

We answered right back in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk to Oli and an infield single from Larquier set the table for Jessica Dignon's 3 run HR to left. This was enough to put Canney in the game, though 8 runs seems a little late to me. She got two quick outs to end the inning, 8-1 Glory after 3.

The 8 runs is the most we have scored in a game since July 1, in a 10-0 win against Chinese Taipei.

No more scoring in the 4th or 5th. For the top of the 6th, the Glory made some lineup changes. Dignon went to third, Larquier to first, and Oli to DH. Desiree Serrano came in to relieve Pauly. Although New England immediately tested the new player (Dignon at third), she passed the test, as the first two batters grounded out to third. Desi put a stop to that nonsense with a strikeout to end the inning. We need to survive just 3 more outs to make it to Sunday.

Sensing that the end was near, New England put Erica Beach into the game, replacing Canney. After Dignon reached on the third Riptide error, Piper walked, and Callista Balko went in to run. Jessica Moore also put the ball in play to see what New England would do with it. Her bunt to third was thrown away, allowing Dignon to score and Balko to reach third. Moore stopped at first. With Catalina Morris batting (she pinch hit for Baber in the 4th and stayed in to play RF), Moore stole second. Morris and Hughes both went down on strikes, but at least they went down swinging. Jackson then doubled both runners home. Oli went down (looking!) to end the inning, with our lead now 11-1.

The final inning looked like it was going to be quick. 2 popups to Larquier started the inning, but a walk and an error put 2 runners on. The lead runner then scored on a single, but another groundout to third ended the game. The final score was 11-2.

We've only scored 11 runs one other time this season, at Akron on June 13 in an 11-0 win. It is, by far, the most runs we've scored in post season play. (The previous high was 4, in last year's 4-0 championship series opener against Rockford.)

Today was a complete turn-around from yesterday, as our pitching reverted back to normal, and our bats did the opposite.  We now get to sit around and watch the Force and Bandits play, and figure out how we're going to hit Burkhart tomorrow, after the Force lose to Chicago. The Sunday game will be at 1 PM Eastern, and is supposed to be on game tracker. Just in case the NPF page is not updated in time once again, this page should be.
